Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has scheduled by-elections for May 14, 2026, to fill three vacant seats, including the high-stakes parliamentary contest in Emurua Dikirr Constituency, Narok County.

The by-elections will also cover Porro Ward in Samburu West Constituency, Samburu County, vacant since January 5, 2026, and Endo Ward in Marakwet East Constituency, Elgeyo/Marakwet County, declared vacant on January 27, 2026.

“Following the declaration of vacancies that occurred in the offices of Member of County Assembly for Porro Ward… Endo Ward… and Member of National Assembly for Emurua Dikirr Constituency… There shall be by-elections in the above-listed electoral areas on Thursday, the 14th May, 2026,” the notice stated.

The Emurua Dikirr poll is expected to draw intense political interest as parties position strong candidates to succeed the late three-term legislator, remembered for his bold advocacy on land and development issues in Narok.

Deadline for Political Parties

IEBC has given political parties until Wednesday, March 25, 2026, to submit names of their nominated candidates. Failure to meet the deadline could lock out parties from fielding contestants in the mini-polls.

The commission has also outlined clear guidelines for independent candidates. Aspirants must prove they have not been members of any political party for at least three months immediately before the by-election date.

“The Commission shall publish in the Gazette, the names and symbols of persons intending to contest in the by-elections as independent candidates within seven days of receipt of the names of the candidates,” the notice added.

Public Officers Required to Resign

Any public officer wishing to contest must resign their position within seven days after the declaration of the relevant vacancy. This requirement aims to ensure a level playing field and prevent abuse of office during the campaign period.

The polls come amid ongoing discussions about IEBC’s budget, with the commission earlier seeking approximately Sh59 million specifically for the Emurua Dikirr by-election.

President William Ruto has already directed that Nairobi’s Shauri Moyo Affordable Housing Estate be renamed Johana Ng’eno Estate in honour of the late MP’s contribution to the housing agenda.

Political analysts say the Emurua Dikirr race could serve as an early test of party strength ahead of the 2027 general election. Voter registration and campaign rules will be strictly enforced, the IEBC has warned.
