The project, one of the largest affordable housing developments in Nairobi City, will now be known as Johana Ng’eno Boma Yangu Estate.
President Ruto praised Ng’eno for his instrumental role as chairman of the parliamentary housing committee, saying the renaming was a fitting tribute to his dedication.
“I am directing the Ministry of Housing to rename Shauri Moyo housing estate to Johana Ng’eno Boma Yangu estate in respect of the good work and efforts that he did as the chairman,” Ruto announced.
The President emphasized that the success of Kenya’s affordable housing programs, decades in the making, was achieved largely due to Ng’eno’s leadership and vision.
Ng’eno’s Legacy in Affordable Housing
Speaking during Ng’eno’s funeral service in Dikirr, Ruto highlighted that he and the late MP had jointly planned the ambitious housing program. The President noted that renaming the estate followed a request from committee members who served under Ng’eno, recognizing his commitment to Kenya’s housing agenda.
“We have tried for 30 years, but we have not succeeded. Today, we have succeeded,” Ruto said, reflecting on the historical importance of the project. He also revealed that when he eventually pens his memoirs, the parliamentary housing committee, led by Ng’eno, will feature prominently.
President Ruto lauded Ng’eno’s passion, saying he never did half measures and remained committed to the nation’s housing goals.
“When we rolled out housing, and as the vice chair of the committee has said, housing was one of the most difficult assignments that I have undertaken as President. It has tested my resilience as a person,” Ruto said.
