The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed the arrest of a key suspect linked to the death of Technical University of Kenya (TUK) lecturer Edgar Mokua.
Mokua’s body was recovered days after he was reported as missing, and police have made a critical development as the suspect is arrested.
“Homicide detectives have arrested a suspect linked to the brutal murder of Edgar Mokua, a lecturer at the Technical University of Kenya (TUK), whose body was recovered days after he mysteriously disappeared from his Lavington home,” the DCI statement said.
“Mokua was last seen on July 6, 2026, when he left his residence at Princes Park, Lavington, at around 4:20 p.m. and never returned. After unsuccessful efforts to trace him, his family reported him missing at Muthangari Police Station.”
Body found
The detectives reported that on July 11, 2026, Mokua’s body was found lying at the City Mortuary, where it had been taken by officers from Kiamumbi Police Station on July 7, after it was recovered along Kamiti Road near Woodcreek Academy.
“The complexity of the case prompted a takeover by homicide detectives, whose painstaking investigations reconstructed Mokua’s final movements,” the DCI stated.
“Detectives established that on the night he disappeared, Mokua spent several hours at Kettle Club in Lavington before proceeding to Ibiza Club, located at Lavington Mall, at around 11:00 p.m. in the company of two men and a woman.”
“While at the club, Mokua struck up a conversation with a woman who was seated alone at the counter. At around 3:30 a.m., his companions left, leaving him behind. Moments later, he joined the woman at the counter. CCTV footage later captured the pair leaving the club together at around 4:41 a.m., with Mokua carrying two tumblers. Outside the club, they boarded a grey Toyota Ractis, registration number KBZ 002R.”
Post-mortem examination
DCI further explained that investigators also established that the same vehicle was used to dump Mokua’s body along Kamiti Road before speeding away from the scene.
“Guided by forensic intelligence, detectives launched an intensive manhunt that culminated in the arrest of Richard Gikuhe Mbugua at Blue Estate in Ruiru, who was forensically placed at the crime scene. Detectives also recovered the grey Toyota Ractis, which is being detained as a key exhibit,” it added.
“With a post-mortem examination unable to conclusively establish the cause of death, a toxicological analysis is expected to determine whether Mokua may have been drugged before his death.”
“The suspect remains in police custody undergoing processing pending arraignment. Meanwhile, homicide detectives are pursuing additional leads to identify and apprehend other suspects who are still at large.”
