Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi has raised concerns over the deteriorating condition of infrastructure at Wilson Airport, warning that the situation poses potential aviation safety risks and requires urgent government intervention.
Speaking at Parliament Buildings on 13 March 2026, the lawmaker sought a statement from the Senate Committee on Roads, Transport and Housing on the status of key facilities at the airport.
Osotsi raised the matter pursuant to Standing Order 53(1) of the Senate Standing Orders, asking the committee to establish the current state of critical infrastructure at the facility.
Wilson Airport, located in Nairobi, is Kenya’s oldest airport and the third busiest aviation facility in the country. The airport handles domestic passenger flights, pilot training operations and charter services to various destinations.
The senator asked the committee to investigate the condition of several operational systems at the airport.
These include the runway, drainage systems, rescue and firefighting equipment, air traffic control systems and power backup installations.
He also requested detailed information from the Ministry of Roads and Transport, Kenya Airports Authority and Kenya Civil Aviation Authority on measures being taken to address what he described as the dilapidated state of some facilities.
Osotsi said the relevant agencies must outline clear steps to restore and maintain the airport infrastructure to ensure compliance with international aviation safety standards.
The senator also raised alarm over buildings and other developments around the airport that exceed prescribed height limits.
According to Osotsi, such developments could pose serious risks to aircraft operations and compromise safety around the airport.
He requested the committee to provide details on the structures near the airport and indicate regulatory actions taken to enforce aviation safety zones.
Osotsi further asked the committee to outline government plans to upgrade, expand and modernize Wilson Airport in order to enhance its operational capacity.
He also sought details on recent aviation incidents reported around the airport, including investigation findings and measures being implemented to prevent future occurrences.
The senator said addressing infrastructure challenges at the airport is critical to safeguarding Kenya’s domestic aviation sector.
