Nairobi commuters experience long traffic over Saba Saba fears

Nairobi residents were subjected to long traffic hours as police enhanced security along highways amid fears of Saba Saba Day anniversary protests.

All roads leading to the Central Business District (CBD) experienced delayed traffic snarl-ups as police erected road blocks and increased security check-ups on July 7, 2026.

The major roads that were affected are Thika Road, Waiyaki Way, Mombasa Road, Jogoo Road, Lang’ata Road, Kiambu Road, Valley Road, and Uhuru Highway.

In a bid to ease traffic flow into the CBD, police diverted motorists, but with limited movement by Public Service Vehicles (PSVs), several commuters were stranded.

Police issue warning

The National Police Service had warned that enhanced security checkpoints would be established in the city in a bid to control the movement of people due to the planned demonstrations.

“The National Police Service wishes to inform all members of the public that, in light of past experience during the Sabasaba commemoration, which is usually observed on 7 July, some members of the public have caused breaches of the peace, thereby interfering with the normal conduct of business for those not participating in the demonstrations,” the police statement said.

“As a security measure, there will be enhanced police checkpoints on various roads within Nairobi city tomorrow, 7 July 2026, to control both human and vehicular movement.

“Members of the public are urged to obey and cooperate with the National Police Service to ensure that peace and order prevail. Any unlawful acts shall be met with the full force of the law.”
