Ruto reaffirms Kenya's commitment to clean energy evolution

President William Ruto has emphasised Kenya’s commitment to green energy evolution and revealed that the government has made it a priority through the National Cooking Transition Strategy.

In a statement released on July 9, 2026, the head of state committed his government’s priority to ensure the clean energy goals are achieved.

Commitment

“We are accelerating investment and stronger partnerships that will ensure universal access to clean cooking across Africa. It is regrettable that nearly one billion people in Africa still rely on traditional fuels that threaten public health, education, and the environment,” Ruto said after addressing the Virtual High-Level Event on Keeping Clean Cooking high on Africa’s development agenda.

“To reaffirm Kenya’s commitment to clean energy, we have made clean cooking a national development priority through the Kenya National Cooking Transition Strategy, which aims to achieve universal access to clean cooking by 2028.”

Ruto added that Kenya and the continent cannot afford to slow down on this critical intervention just five years before the deadline of achieving United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

“We welcome the announcement at the summit of $900 million in new commitments towards the clean cooking agenda. The launch of the Clean Cooking Security Programme is also a critical step towards accelerating the transition to clean cooking,” he added.

“The event was initially planned as the Second Africa Clean Cooking Summit to be hosted in Nairobi.”

Pact with US

Ruto’s commitment comes months after the government and the United States entered into a deal to strengthen their partnership to advance cooperation in nuclear power, geothermal energy, clean cooking, and green industrialisation.

This was confirmed by Energy Principal Secretary (PS) Alex Wachira in March.

“Engaged with the leadership at the US Department of Energy during a bilateral session focusing on moving forward the US-Kenya energy cooperation. This high-level delegation exemplifies the strong relations Kenya is building with the US government in nuclear power development, geothermal exploitation, clean cooking and green industrialisation,” Wachira stated then.

“The meeting was chaired by Kyle Haustveit, Assistant Secretary, Hydrocarbons and Geothermal Energy Office, accompanied by William Schirano, who serves as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Multilateral Engagement and Market Development at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).”
