Police confirmed the arrest of a passenger along the busy Webuye-Eldoret Highway carrying bhang with an estimated street value of Ksh3 million.
In a statement released by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), police officers from Lumakanda station intercepted the vehicle with the passenger and arrested the man in question.
“Law enforcement officers from Lumakanda Police Station have intercepted a public service vehicle (PSV) along the Webuye-Eldoret Highway, nabbing a passenger with a stash of cannabis sativa valued at approximately Sh3 million on the streets,” DCI said in a statement.
“Acting on a tip-off, the officers set up a strategic roadblock at Lumakanda Junction, ready to catch the would-be traffickers red-handed. Just moments later, their efforts paid off when they intercepted the PSV suspected of ferrying the prohibited herb,” it added.
Search
After a meticulous search, the police uncovered bales of bhang, and Otieno was taken to the station, where he was held awaiting processing for the court process to begin.
“A quick search revealed one passenger, identified as Kelvin Onyango, with bales of bhang stuffed in two green sacks, tipping the scales at 100 kilograms,” the statement continued.
“Onyango was swiftly escorted to Lumakanda Police Station, undergoing processing pending arraignment. Meanwhile, the recovered narcotics are being detained as exhibits.”
Bhang worth Ksh6M seized
Meanwhile, the arrest comes barely a week after police arrested two individuals in possession of an estimated 100 kilograms of bhang in Kilifi County.
“National Police Service officers have recovered 200 kilograms of cannabis with an estimated street value of Ksh6 million during an intelligence-led operation conducted in the Thalatha Meli area of Malindi Sub-County, Kilifi County,” the police statement said.
“During the operation, officers raided a residential house where two suspects were found. A thorough search of the premises led to the recovery of five gunny bags containing dry plant material suspected to be cannabis. The recovered substance was weighed and found to have a total weight of 200 kilograms.
“The two suspects were arrested and, together with the recovered exhibits, escorted to Malindi Police Station, where they remain in custody pending further investigations and subsequent arraignment in court.”
The security agencies have in recent days intensified crackdowns against banned substances in a bid to reduce drug abuse.
