The decision by President Uhuru Kenyatta to terminate the construction of the Sh22.2 billion Kimwarer Dam has been faulted by a section of the leaders from the North Rift region.
The leaders who include Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen Wednesday accused the technical committee that recommended the cancellation of misadvising the President.
Murkomen now wants President Kenyatta to constitute a fresh technical committee which reflects the ethnic and regional balance which understood the needs of the people of the area.
“I urge the President to constitute a transparent team that is national in character to look at all projects in Kenya and that which will not ethnically profile some regions for discrimination,” he said.
Murkomen who is also the Elgeyo Marakwet Senator said he was not surprised by the cancellation which he claims was already pre-determined by the technical committee led by former Public Works Principal Secretary Paul Maringa.
“The Technical Committee didn’t consult anyone and didn’t carryout public participation. Elgeyo Marakwet County has been denied rightful share of national projects in deliberate act of discrimination. They would rather default and pay contractors billions of money for breach of contract than to see our people benefit.”
“We’re consulting as people of Elgeyo Marakwet County and we shall do everything to ensure that justice is done,” the Senate Majority Leader said.
Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot on his part wants the President to reveals how much the country will lose following the cancellation and the action he intends to take against all the officers in his administration who initiated this mess.
“It is important that our President also reveals to us the cancellation cost & the action he intends to take against all the officers in his administration who initiated this mess,” said the Kericho legislator.
