During a police raid on three homes in Karen, Nairobi, on Friday, 23 guns, according to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, were found.
In a statement, the CS stated that they believe those living in the homes that were raided are providing the guns used in the most recent anti-government demonstrations.
“According to security intelligence, some of the items, including rifles and other simple weapons, have been used to incite violence during violent demonstrations. We think they are supplied by a big network of recognized criminal gang leaders and civilian gun owners,” said Kindiki.
“Today afternoon, an operation has been going on targeting three homesteads in the Karen area where a total of 23 firearms are kept, some of which are suspected to have been used in illegal activities,” he said on Friday.
The residence of Jomo Kenyatta, son of former president Uhuru Kenyatta, was among those searched.
According to Kindiki, Jomo’s home was one among those believed to hold firearms, both for supporting violent protests and for other illicit actions.
Uhuru Kenyatta, a former president, thinks that his son’s friendship with Raila Odinga is what led to the raid on his home.
He asserts that if the government has a problem with him, they ought to quit targeting his family and deal with him directly.
“What does my mum have to do with it? What do my kids have to do with it? I’ve been quiet, but that doesn’t mean I’m afraid.” Uhuru took a jibe to President William Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua by saying, “I am prepared to defend my family with everything I have, and if it’s me you want, come for me.”
However, according to Kindiki, the raid was carried out simply for security reasons and was a component of a larger nationwide operation to ensure the safety and stability of the nation.
