Police managed to recover military gear after a raid on a hideout suspected to be used by gangs in Soy, Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.
The police launched the raid in the Sungura area, a premise believed to be the gang’s headquarters for planning illegal activities.
“Barely 24 hours after detectives fatally shot four suspected gangsters along the Eldoret–Kiplombe–Soy Road, investigators have uncovered what is believed to be the gang’s operational hideout in Huruma, Eldoret,” a statement by DCI said.
“Acting on credible intelligence, detectives from DCI Soy conducted a raid on a house in the Sungura area. Preliminary investigations indicate that this premise served as a base of operations for the gang’s illicit activities,” it added.
Search
Apart from military gear, other items were recovered during the raid.
“A thorough search of the premises yielded an assortment of items linked to their criminal activities. Among the recovered items were five Kenya Defence Forces jungle jackets, a heavy wedge hammer, a crowbar, and two mobile phones, among other items,” the police statement revealed.
“The recovery of the military-style attire adds a crucial piece to the ongoing investigations into a criminal network masquerading as police and military personnel to carry out violent robberies across the Rift Valley region.”
DCI added that Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) detectives have processed and documented the scene, ensuring that all recovered items are secured as evidence for forensic analysis.
“As investigations continue, detectives are hot on the trail of the gang’s fleeing accomplices, determined to unravel the full extent of this syndicate’s operations,” the statement continued.
“The DCI expresses its gratitude to the vigilant members of the public for their unwavering support and urges them to continue sharing information to help keep our communities safe.”
Fierce gunfire
The raid comes barely days after four armed gangsters were fatally shot and a loaded Falcon pistol was recovered after the suspects engaged police in a fierce gun battle during an intelligence-led operation along the Eldoret–Kiplombe–Soy Road.
The incident unfolded after detectives from the Operation Action Team (OAT), augmented by local law enforcement officers acting on credible information from vigilant members of the public, laid an ambush.
