Isiolo Law Court has jailed two men for 12 years after they were found with explosives without a permit.

According to a report by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the two were intercepted by a multi-agency team manning a roadblock at Archers Post, Samburu County, along the Isiolo-Marsabit Highway on September 9, 2023, before they were charged.

Sentenced

“Two men, Musa Mohammed and Joel Ntongai Ntonja, have been sentenced to twelve years in prison by the Isiolo Law Court after they were found in possession of explosives without the necessary permits,” the statement said.

“A prompt search revealed 10 cartons containing a total of 1,600 pieces of Explogel V6 25×270 water gel, six 250-meter rolls of detonating cord, and 50 Ideal SSD 1 electric detonators. After their interception, Musa and Joel were swiftly taken to Isiolo Police Station, where the Anti-terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) took over the investigation.”

After the arrest, Mohammed and Ntonja found themselves facing charges of possession of explosives contrary to section 29 of the Explosives Act, Cap 115, Laws of Kenya, and conveyance of explosives without a permit as dictated by sections 13(1) and 13(2) of the same Act.

“The case reached its conclusion on July 9, 2026, with Magistrate Maureen Odhiambo delivering the verdict. Following a thorough review, she declared the men guilty on three counts, leading to a fine of Ksh300,000 each and, in default, to serve four years in prison for each count.”

Public warned

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations reminded members of the public that possessing or conveying explosives without the necessary permit poses a grave threat to public safety.

“Those found engaging in such acts will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” DCI concluded.
