The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed the surrender of three illegal firemen in Tana River County.
The NPS statement confirmed the firearms were surrendered on July 9, 2026, as the police intensify their fight against insecurity in several parts of the country.
“Three illegally held firearms and forty-three rounds of ammunition were voluntarily surrendered yesterday, 9th July 2026, in separate recoveries across Tana River County, reinforcing the steady momentum of the ongoing community-led disarmament initiative,” the police statement said.
“In Bangale, a multi-agency team of security officers received two AK-47 rifles, together with thirty-five rounds of ammunition, from members of the public. In Tana North Sub-County, another firearm and eight rounds of ammunition were voluntarily handed over, adding to the growing number of weapons being removed from circulation through public cooperation.”
Security interventions
The police emhpasised that the crackdown against illegal firearms has been made easier as the communities concerned collaborate with the security agencies.
“Beyond the numbers, the recoveries reflect an approach that places communities at the centre of security interventions. The multi-agency approach, working in close coordination with local stakeholders, continues to create an environment in which members of the public are increasingly choosing dialogue and cooperation over silence,” the statement added.
The National Police Service said it will continue to maintain regular interactions with residents, building confidence and encouraging the peaceful handover of illegally held weapons, with the shared objective of enhancing public safety and ensuring lasting peace and security.
“We appeal for continued support in ongoing security efforts by sharing information on illegal firearms and criminal activities,” the statement concluded.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has been at the forefront in pushing the police to counter criminal gangs and urging the communities to cooperate.
