From unprecedented match attendance and television audience numbers, security operations, and economic impact, the White House says “Americans are falling in love with the World Cup, and the world is falling in love again with the United States”
The White House Task Force on the FIFA World Cup 2026 has said the tournament has recorded significant milestones in attendance, security operations, transportation performance, and economic impact as the tournament enters its final stage.
Executive Director Andrew Giuliani, who delivered the update during a media briefing at the Washington Foreign Press Center ahead of the start of the quarter finals, said more than 6.5 million fans had attended matches. This is nearly double the previous World Cup attendance record the last time the US hosted the tournament in 1994.
“Results have astounded even those of us who saw potential for this once-a-generation event,” said Giuliani.
“Viewership records for soccer in the United States also have been shattered, and billions of people around the globe have watched matches.”
He stated that an estimated 1.3 billion viewers watched the US opening match against Paraguay, while 2.7 billion tuned in for Argentina’s round of 16 tie against minnows Cape Verde.
Broad global moment
The combination of record stadium turnout and massive global audiences has positioned the 2026 tournament as one of the most widely consumed sporting events in history.
“Soccer has captured America’s imagination with record-breaking audiences and energy across this country.
“Soccer is no longer a future America story. It’s happening right now. We have demonstrated that there is no better place to host major sporting events than the United States of America.”
Host cities have reported a striking level of international participation, with host cities welcoming visitors from 157 nationalities.
Giuliani said the turnout reflects a broader global moment, calling it “a moment of global unity and American greatness.”
The influx of international fans has also contributed to local economic activity amounting to billions, with most host cities reporting sales up to 10 times their usual daily revenue.
“Dallas is projecting to generate $2.1 billion in economic activity. San Francisco is reporting that the rate of capacity of all their matches – so attendance numbers – is 99.6%. I’ve seen that number is well over 99% for the 96 matches that have already been completed.”
The surge in attendance has coincided with one of the most extensive security operations ever mounted for a US sporting event. Federal agencies reported 1,487 drone detections, 646 seizures, and 310 citations issued since the start of the tournament. Thirteen arrests have been made in connection with drone violations.
Human trafficking enforcement has also been active, with Immigration and Customs Enforcement reporting 343 arrests, and the US Marshals recovering 35 missing children in the first week. CBP has seized more than 1,400 shipments of counterfeit FIFA merchandise valued at an estimated $26 billion.
Extensive security operations
Giuliani said the government’s approach has remained consistent, noting, “We will do everything in our power to make these games be as safe and successful as possible.”
“The FBI has stepped up and really led the way in a lot of the effort here in keeping this World Cup safe, along with the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of War as well.
“The Department of Homeland Security and the FBI have confiscated more than 600 drones since the start of the tournament, keeping players, officials, and fans safe across stadiums and fanfests.”
Transportation systems in host cities have recorded historic ridership as fans move between stadiums and fan zones, with cities recording surges in passenger numbers by as high as 800% in daily travelers.
With record-setting attendance, unprecedented global viewership, fans arriving from more than 150 countries, and extensive security and transportation operations supporting the event, the FIFA World Cup 2026 has marked a significant moment for the US, which is also preparing to host the 2028 Olympics and Paralympic Games.
“These achievements reflect the vision President Trump had during his 45th presidency to land this World Cup,” Giuliani said.
