Thomas Tuchel has challenged England to turn the pain of their FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final defeat to Argentina into a winning response against France in Saturday’s bronze final in Miami, urging his players to show the steely mentality that has carried them through the tournament.
The Three Lions’ hopes of reaching the final were ended in heartbreaking fashion by Lionel Messi and Co, but Tuchel insisted there is no time to dwell on the disappointment, with third place and history still within reach.
“We carry the most pain of all. It’s our scar we have to carry now,” the England coach told media at his pre-match press conference on Friday.
Tuchel said his side must quickly refocus
“It is a very painful defeat, and we have to live with it. We will, like always – because we are competitive and every single player in this camp is competitive – overcome it, we will use it and we will have a reaction and that starts from tomorrow.”
Tuchel said his side must quickly refocus after the anguish of their last-four exit, with the bronze final against two-time world champions France providing one last test of their character.
“It’s a chance to have the best result in 60 years for England,” he stressed. “It is a big game against one of the very best teams in the world, and maybe the team in the best shape until the semi-final.
“Mentality is not something you switch on and switch off. It’s a moment to show what we are made of, what we showed through the whole tournament.”
Tuchel also confirmed he will make personnel changes for the meeting with Didier Deschamps’ France, although he is yet to decide the extent of the rotation. “I don’t know how many, I haven’t decided,” the German said.
Defender John Stones, meanwhile, admitted the loss to Argentina would take time to process, but added that the swift turnaround means England can respond immediately.
“It’s very easy to say ‘What if?’,” Stones said. “It’s a tough thing to get over straight away, or digest straight away, but that’s the cruel position we’re in right now. I think it’ll become apparent once the emotions die down. I think tomorrow, coming round so quick, is another good focus to go and get a bronze medal.”
