Interior CS Fred Matiang’i has declared Saturday, 10 October a public holiday named Huduma Day.
In a press release, Matiang’i said the holiday would be observed through national prayers that will highlight service and volunteerism to the community.
“Kenyans are encouraged to participate in the prayers and promote national unity, social justice, cohesion and sustainable development in their communities for the benefit of present and future generations,” he said.
President Uhuru Kenyatta is scheduled to lead the nation in an inter-faith national prayer service on Saturday.
State House Spokesperson Kanze Dena said the Head of State has dedicated 9-11 October a national weekend of prayer.
The prayer service will take place at State House, Nairobi starting 10am and will be broadcast live on all leading television, radio and digital media platforms.
“Kenyans are encouraged to pray for the country in their usual places of worship in compliance with Covid-19 containment protocols,” the State House statement reads.
In December last year, the Cabinet approved the renaming of Moi Day to Huduma Day.
State House said the renaming of Moi Day to Huduma Day is “in line with former President Daniel Arap Moi’s desire that the day be commemorated as a day of service and volunteerism.”
