AFC Leopards star explains how verbal agreement cost him sign-on fee

AFC Leopards vice-captain and utility star Kayci Odhiambo has revealed how a verbal agreement with the club cost him thousands of shillings.

Odhiambo joined Ingwe in August 2021 from defunct Mt Kenya United, but the experience of the transfer left a hard-to-forget moment for him.

Odhiambo said he was duped out of Ksh250,000 in a sign-on fee, although he blames himself for the experience.

“In my first contract at AFC Leopards, I went to negotiate alone, yet I had never signed a contract in my life. We agreed on a sign-on fee of Ksh300,000, but they gave me Ksh50,000, with a promise to channel the rest to my account the following day,” Odhiambo explained during a soccer event organised by Eleven Eleven TV at MYSA grounds in Komarock.

“They then gave me the contract papers and the amount, which I hurriedly signed, having just confirmed the salary. I was coming from the National Super League (NSL), where I did not even have a contract.”

Shocking experience

Odhiambo said he was shocked to learn that the remaining money was not captured in his contract.

“The following day, I followed up, and I was told that the remaining amount was not in the contract and therefore will not be paid, as the agreement was only verbal,” he added.

Out of this experience, the Ingwe star said he decided to take on a noble mission of advising the upcoming on how to go about signing contracts.

“I would therefore urge young and upcoming players to contact an agent to accompany them when signing these contracts,” he stated.

“Should you not be able to afford one, you should tag along with either a senior player or a retired player who has signed many contracts and may be aware and would not cost much.”
