Sonko faces senators over deputy appointment, cabinet constitution

By

Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko is currently facing before the Senate to respond to several issues affecting the county, chiefly the question of him appointing a deputy.

The committee on devolution is also grilling the flamboyant county boss on the constitution of the county executive committee.

Polycarp Igathe resigned as Sonko’s number two in February 2018 and what has followed is a revolving door situation with executive committee members, some being fired and others opting out.

Education CEC Janet Ouko is the latest one who quit, accusing the governor of high-handedness and running a one-man show governance system.

Sonko has recently reinstated two of the CEC’s sacked while a nominee for the health docket has turned down nomination to serve in the county.

An advisory opinion of the Supreme Court in 2018 allowed governors to nominate persons to serve as deputy governors, with the approval of the County Assembly, in the event the position becomes vacant.

The former senator was summoned following a directive by speaker Kenneth Lusaka upon request by Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja.
