The 2019 Sportpesa Kenyan Premier League trophy will be handed to Gor Mahia playing unit on Saturday May 25 after facing off wounded Posta Rangers at the Machakos Kenyatta Stadium.
Gor Mahia are beaming with confidence after winning the League title for three consecutive years which is a historic milestone. Saturday’s match will be a mere formality match where Gor coach Hassan Oktay is expected to field a makeshift side.
In other matches, Sony Sugar lying fourth with 55 points will host 12th placed Nzoia Sugar in Awendo. The match will kick off at 1pm.
Chemelil Sugar, in 15th place, who are threatened with relegation will entertain visiting Mathare United.
Top guns AFC Leopards,Tusker and Sofapaka will take a break this weekend having played most of their matches during the weekday.
Last weekend, fans were treated to the Mashemeji Derby where Gor Mahia emerged winners after mauling AFC Leopards 3-1 at Kasarani.
The two arch rivals went out of their way by supporting a human interest initiative by Missing Child Kenya during the two clubs’ SPL 2018-19 Round 31 encounter.
This support was shown through players of AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia players walking to the pitch while holding posters of missing children which had been verified by Missing Child Kenya.
Images of the players carrying the posters were broadcast to a live audience that followed the match on the KPL Facebook Page and KTN News.
This initiative was also a tribute to the worldwide practice of footballers being accompanied to the pitch by child mascots.
By doing so, the AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia players; raised awareness about the alarming trend of missing children and the efforts being made to find them and reunite them with their families, and sensitized the public about the need to protect children, and therefore, by extension, contribute to the preservation of the age-old tradition of child mascots accompanying footballers to the pitch.
Three children whose photographs had been carried by the players have since been found safe and reunited with their families.
The three children who have been found and reunited with their families are Chantel Gift Osebe (13 years old), Evamariserah Murugi (16 years old), and Prudence Khavugwi (11 years old).
