Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has cancelled a contract of sourcing drugs for its health facilities from the recommended state corporation Kenya Medical Supplies Authority over as fraudulent payment claim row.
The infuriated Governor said: “The 300 million shillings claim by Kemsa is fraudulent since there is no evidence of drugs that were supplied and i’m not going to allow the payments.”
Governor Mbuvi has also directed the county CS health and the health committee to come up with a formula that will enable the county source for drugs from an alternative supplier by next week.
”Nairobians can not continue to suffer and die because of lack of drugs yet we have the money and resources to procure what they need.
”We give them (Kemsa) millions of shillings and they continue to deny us drugs to serve Nairobians who are in need of the drugs.”
The Governor is now calling upon the DCI to investigate and arrest those behind the scheme to falsely try and obtain money from the county government.
He also wants the DCI Boss George Kinoti to investigate pending bills of the past County regime who were involved in corrupt procurement practices.
”We have availed three files on ow the fraudulent drugs were procured in the past regime. Those who are still in office both county officers and kemsa officials who are no longer in service , we shall pursue the upto their houses.”
The Governor was speaking during the launch of the Human milk Bank at the Pumwani Maternity hospital , the first of its kind in the country.
City hospital and other health facilities have been grappling with the acute shortage in the last six months, with the last drugs batch to be received from the state corporation, Kemsa being in August last year, all occasioned by 309 million debt in question.
