Nairobi River and its surrounding slums will soon regain their lost glory,Nairobi city county Environment Cabinet Secretary Vesca Kagongo has said.
Addressing Korogocho slums residents during a cleanup exercise,Kagongo who was flanked by National Environment Management Authority(NEMA) officials thanked Nairobi Governor Hon.Mike Sonko for leading the campaign in cleaning up the city through the Beautification programme that has turned Nairobi to a paradise.
‘Without our Governor, most of our youth could now be thieves.Youth are busy, he has created employment for the youth while the rate of crime has gone down.I’m appealing to Nairobi residents to exercise cleanliness so that we can attract more tourist and make the environment clean.This exercise of making Nairobi River clean and flowing should not be left to the City county alone, all of us must participate by ensuring gabbages are not thrown to the river.We want water to flow effectively “ she said.
She said the Nairobi County Government had equipped the Youth with protective gear including boots,helmet,Gloves,and wearing masks .
Youth leader Patrick Maina thanked Nairobi Governor (Hon Mike Sonko) for his current crusade of cleaning Nairobi through the beautification programme. He urged Nairobians especially those who stay in the slums and within Nairobi River to observe cleanliness and avoid throwing gabbages to the river.
He said they have encountered dumped bodies and syringes which have hampered their efforts in cleaning the river.
Nema officials during the function included John Konchellah who is the Chairman,Geoffrey Wahungu(Director General) and Board member Hon.Augustino Neto among others.
