The Sportpesa Kenya Premier League enters its 19th round this weekend with only two matches on the card.
Majority of teams will take a rest after being involved in mid-week action. The two matches will be overshadowed by Sunday’s CAF confederation Group D tie as Gor Mahia host Petro Atletico of Angola in their final Group clash at the 60,000-seater Kasarani Stadium.
Bottom-placed Mt. Kenya United will host Vihiga United at the Machakos Stadium, while ninth-placed Kakamega Homeboyz face an acid test on Sunday when they tackle battle-hardened Mathare United at Bukhungu Stadium.
Vihiga United are tipped to collect maximum points against Mt. Kenya United going by their current run but the Kakamega side should not underrate their hosts, who suffered one of their heaviest defeats on March 2, when they were vanquished 6-0.
Mt. Kenya boast of some experienced played led by Timona Wanyonyi and Moses “Dube” Otieno, who on his day can give opponents a torrid time.
Sunday’s match pitting Kakamega Homeboys and Mathare United can go either way – the Kakamega side likely to capitalize on the Slum Boys reported slow down due to non-payment of their February salary.
Homeboyz will count on the services of veteran Allan Wanga, David Okoth, Maxwell Ravel
and Peter Thiongo to silence their opponents.
Reports suggest Mathare players downed their tools on Tuesday to protest their unpaid salaries and allowances.
The playing unit gave the daily training drills a wide berth to signal their grievances to the management of the club over their unpaid February salary and allowances as well as the non-remittance of their 40% of the January salary.
“We last trained on Monday but no one reported on the following day, Wednesday and Thursday,” a source told Kurunzi Sport.
“We haven’t been paid our February salary and allowances yet we are approaching April. The club has also not wired 40% of our January dues. We are supposed to play Homeboyz this weekend in Kakamega but we are yet to hear from the office.”
