Former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has been arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission following a corruption investigation involving an irregular payment of KSh68 million to a law firm during his tenure.
Kidero was arrested Friday morning alongside George Wainaina who served as his Chief of Staff and two other officials.
The Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji said he approved the arrest and prosecution of 17 officials over the payment to Wachira Mburu, Mwangi and Company Advocates.
“The Ethic and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) initially submitted the duplicate inquiry file to this office on 11th December 2018 and upon perusal and consideration of the evidence therein, a number of gaps were identified that required to be covered by way of investigations before charges could be filed in court,” the DPP said in a statement.
Among those wanted include former Mayor John Ndirangu, former councilor Mutunga Mutungi and a former accountant Hannah Muthoni Kariuki who is listed to have received Sh11 million from the loot.
The DPP said that the suspects will face five charges, among them money laundering, abuse of office and unlawful acquisition of public property.
Others on the EACC radar include Former Acting Legal Affairs Director Aduma Joshua Owuor, Former Mayor John Ndirangu, former Councilor Mutunga Mutungi and Acting Internal Audit Deputy Director Manasseh Karanja Kepha.
Former City Hall accountants Philomena Kavinya Nzuki, Ng’ang’a Mungai Ng’ang’a, Charity Muringo Ndiritu, Peterson Andrew Njiru, Ekaya Alumasi, James Mimi Mbugua, Elizabeth Wanjiru Nderitu, Alice Njeri Mundia and John Ngari Wainaina—a director of Cups Limited.
In September last year, Kidero was arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit an offence of corruption that led to the loss of Sh213 million.
