With just a week before the Green Commandos holiday football camp kicks off at the historic Kakamega High School, organisers confirm all being on course but there is more excitement to the whole plan following confirmation of participants from outside Kenya.
A source has told Kurunzi Sport that a group of players from Ghana are expected in the camp, drawn from Volta International Football Academy.
“They have reached out and we are finalising their registration and consulting on the immigration procedures so that their participation is not hindered by those protocols,” the source said.
The two-week camp will begin on 4 August and will feature programs for coaches and players; all to be facilitated by coaches from Spain under the GC partnership with Edukick.
Edukick is an internationally-acclaimed football academy, established in 2001 and has branches in nine countries, among them United States, Spain and Italy.
“We are excited about this partnership which mainly seeks to identify and nurture talent while giving the youth the chance to progress academically,” says Isaac Kwoba, an alumnus of Kakamega High School and chairman of the organising committee for the camp.
Mainly driven by alumni and former players of Kakamega High School, including former Kenya internationals Simon Mulama, Ronnie Watsiera and Peter Ouma, among others; the camp will see players hone their skills on and off the pitch.
“Football talent without life skills would amount to nothing and our intention is to ensure that the generation of players we produce will not waste away because they are unable to make decisions about their future for lack of life skills,” emphasizes William Ojonyo – the chairman of the school’s alumni association.
“We want to ensure that GC rediscovers its old mojo of producing top football players while developing their life skills. Everybody knows that inter-schools football was never anything without Kakamega (high school) and that’s the standard we want to restore while making it better by equipping these talents with life skills.”
Registration is ongoing but will close once 100 players and 40 coaches enlist themselves.
