The second edition of the Victor Wanyama Charity Cup which kicked off on Saturday received a shot in the arm after receiving a KSh1 million sponsorship cheque from Brookside Dairy.

The tournament got underway on Saturday at St Mary’s School in Lavington, Nairobi, with girls teams making their maiden appearance in the event.

Event co-ordinator – Abdul Haq, said the latest development was meant to ensure girls got the opportunity to play at the highest level like the boys.

“We deemed it fit to incorporate girls since the country is teeming with talent in this category. It is also in our interest to nurture their talent in a bid for them to have flourishing careers,” said Haq.

The event has attracted 16 boys and eight girls’ teams whose winners will receive KSh500,000 and KSh300,000 respectively which will go towards catering for school fees of the players.

Runners-up in the boys category will take home KSh300,000, third placed KSh100,000 and fourth-placed KSh50,000.

Girls winners will pocket KSh30,000, runners-up KSh150,000, third-placed KSh75,000 and fourth-placed KSh50,000.

Brookside General Manager (procurement) Emmanuel Kabaki said the company was proud to be associated with a tournament that is geared towards harnessing talent.
