Inspector General of Police, Hillary Mutyambai, has met former Olympic champion Asbel Kiprop in what is meant to help the athlete cope with the aftermath of his four-year ban for doping.
Asbel, also a former world champion over 1,500 metres, failed a out-of-competition test and his appeal was dismissed by the Athletes Integrity Unit of the IAAF – the world’s governing body, confirming his ban from May 2018.
He took to social media to protest his innocence, arguing he had his samples tampered with by his framers. He suggested he would use his official firearm to get his justice,whilst asking IAAF to “come for your medals, I don’t need them on my wall”.
His estranged wife, Sammary Cherotich, urged Kenyans to support the “talented athlete” and stop trolling him because he was mentally depressed and needed help.
“I am not saying that because he (Asbel) is my husband. Kenyans should support him like they did when he was winning, ” Cherotich, who separated from the runner nearly two years ago was quoted in the media.
And on Tuesday, IG Mutyambai invited the runner, whose track exploits saw him rise to the position of Chief Inspector of Police, for a courtesy call.
“Chief Inspector Asbel Kiprop is our hero. We can’t forget him,” the National Police Service quoted the IG on their official Twitter account.
