Peter Tabichi, a Maths and Physics teacher from Kenya, has won the prestigious award and the attached prize bag worth KSh100 million. He won the award after making the final shortlist of 10 from an initial list of more than 10,000 teachers from around the world.
He becomes that first and only African to have won the feat.
President Uhuru Kenyatta is among those to have hailed the teacher, who comes from Manga Sub-County in Nyamira County.
Tabichi, 36, is a teacher in Nakuru County and was recently installed as Gusii clan elder in Esaba village of Nyamira County.
The Head of State said Tabichi is a “a shining example on what the human spirit can achieve.”
“On behalf of all Kenyans let me congratulate you on winning the Global Teacher Prize for this year. You are a shining example on what the human spirit can achieve not just for Kenya, not just for Africa but the world,” said President Kenyatta in a video statement.
“Peter you chose to teach in a remote part of Kenya and transform lives in such situations. A choice that am sure was difficult. You give me faith that Africa’s best days are ahead of us and your story will light the way for all future generations.”
