Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has confirmed that over three hundred and fifty people were arrested over the June 25, 2026, protests.
According to the CS, more people were arrested in Nairobi County than in any other part of the country. Murkomen said 161 were arrested in the city, and that number was followed by Kajiado with 123 and Kiambu with 36. Other counties where arrests were reported include Murang’a (12), Bungoma (9), Meru (6), Laikipia (5), and Machakos (3).
No arrests were made in the North Eastern, Nyanza, and Coast regions.
“Consequently, a total of 355 arrests were made in connection with the demonstrations, and this is a developing case. It could be more than 355,” Murkomen said during a press conference on Thursday.
“Acting on credible intelligence that groups were being ferried from other parts of the country to cause a breach of peace in Nairobi, our security agencies took measures to protect businesses in the city and avert chaos,” the former Elgeiyo-Marakwet senator stated.
“I wish to report that no widespread cases of looting, vandalism, skirmishes, or injuries were reported in the country in relation to today’s demonstrations.”
Peaceful protest
The Interior CS said future protests should be as peaceful as the ones witnessed on Thursday.
“Today’s example is the type of example that you want in a country like ours going forward. We should pick from the lessons that we learned today and ensure that future protests are as peaceful as possible,” explained.
“In the morning, there was a lot of caution, but in the course of the day, many people began to come to town. Going forward, I hope that there will be no economic sabotage when we have protests because citizens will not have to fear going about their business.”
The protests were held to commemorate the victims who lost their lives during the 2024 Finance Bill demonstrations.
