Police have arrested five people in Meru Town following the June 25, 2026, demonstrations.
The protests were held as the anniversary to commemorate the 2024 anti-Finannce Bill demonstrations that turned violent across the country.
According to Imenti North Sub-County Police Commander Ambrose Kyalo, five people have been arrested so far as police intensify operations amid the protest that has also rocked other parts of the country.
“We have arrested five individuals in connection with today’s demonstrations, and investigations are ongoing,” Kyalo told the media.
“Our officers are fully prepared to protect lives and property. We urge residents to remain calm and continue with their daily activities as we maintain law and order,” he added.
Wamalwa defends demos
Meanwhile, DAP-Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa has defended the June 25 demonstrations and said the peaceful movement was aimed at demanding justice for families who lost their loved ones during the 2024 protests.
“We are happy that the march has been successful. The march to Parliament was peaceful. Today’s march was a march for justice, a march for accountability. It is not enough that this government has given compensation to the families. What the families are asking for is justice,” Wamalwa said during a press conference held on Thursday, June 25, 2026.
“The rogue officers who shot and killed must be investigated, arrested, and prosecuted so that each family can get justice. When the people say it should be a public holiday, they have the last say.
“As the incoming government, we will ensure future memorials on this day are formalised as a public holiday,” Wamalwa said.
“All those abducted and tortured and those who disappeared equally deserve justice and compensation,” he continued.
The anniversary protests were held in various parts of the country, with Nairobi City being the hotspot.
