Amid growing rumours that AFC Leopards are set to lose their first-choice goalkeeper Humphrey Katasi to Gor Mahia, the club’s chairman, Boniface Ambani, has cleared the air.
The goalkeeper has been reported to be on his way to the Football Kenya Federation Premier League champions ahead of the 2026/27 season.
As the rumours gather momentum, Ingwe’s chairman, Ambani, has broken the silence over the matter. According to Ambani, Leopards and Katasi are in talks, and he hopes a deal will be struck.
“According to the information, he’s coming back tomorrow. We had a talk with him, and then he came up with a figure, and then we told him, ‘Okay, fine, you go; we’ll sit down and discuss it’. If it’s okay, fine,” Ambani told a local podcast.
However, the club’s top official said that they would not stand in the way of the goalkeeper if he decides to leave.
“If it’s not okay, interestingly, I usually say, ‘If you think you have got a better offer somewhere, then definitely we’ll allow you to go’. But we still have talks; we still need to talk with him, and from there, we’ll settle on something. If it can’t, then definitely it can’t,” he added.
Katasi grabs his chance
Following the departure of Levis Opiyo, Katasi grabbed the opportunity and stamped authority as AFC Leopards’ first-choice keeper under coach Fred Ambani.
Katasi is a product of St. Anthony’s Boys High School, Kitale, and he joined Ingwe from Nzoia Sugar three years ago.
Katasi is not the only goalkeeper that has been linked with Gor Mahia, as Equity FC’s Michael Onyango is another rumoured to be on his way to join the reigning league champions.
Onyango won the National Super League Golden Glove award last season. As Onyango and Katasi are linked with K’Ogalo, Gad Mathews has been named among the players reportedly on their way out.
Gor Mahia preying on AFC Leopards
If Katasi eventually joins K’Ogalo, it would be the latest such move made by a player from Ingwe to their traditional archrivals.
Lewis Bandi is the latest player to have crossed from AFC Leopards to Gor Mahia. Previously, Austin Odhiambo joined K’Ogalo after an impressive run with Ingwe.
