South Africa’s rising star Relebohile Mofokeng has revealed the words of encouragement from coach Hugo Broos that helped settle his nerves before making his FIFA World Cup debut in Bafana Bafana’s 1-1 draw with Czechia on Wednesday.

Regarded as one of South Africa’s brightest prospects after three impressive seasons with former African champions Orlando Pirates, the 21-year-old was introduced in the second half and made an immediate impact, helping change the momentum of the match as Bafana Bafana fought back to claim a valuable point.

Speaking after the encounter in Atlanta, Mofokeng admitted that stepping onto football’s biggest stage was a daunting experience, but credited Broos and his teammates for giving him the confidence to express himself.

Mofokeng’s display offered glimpse of quality

“This is my first World Cup, my first game, so the coach just told me to be confident and believe in myself. He told me that he believes in me, so I must believe in myself and help the team as much as I possibly can”, said Mofokeng.

“The game was very difficult because obviously this is the biggest stage in football. So the courage from my coach and teammates helped a lot because I think you need confidence and you need to believe in yourself.”

The young playmaker said Broos had a simple message for him before sending him into the contest. “The coach just said I must play, I must be myself and just do my best,” he added.

Mofokeng’s lively display offered a glimpse of the quality that has seen him emerge as one of the most exciting young talents on the continent – helping South Africa wrestle back control in the second half.

The point against Czechia leaves Bafana Bafana with their hopes of reaching the FIFA World Cup knockout stages for the first time still alive.

Attention now turns to Thursday’s decisive Group A encounter against South Korea, where victory could secure a historic place in the Round of 32.

Having impressed off the bench in Atlanta, Mofokeng is expected to start as Broos’ side continue to fight for a place in the knockout stage.
