Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka has appealed to Pope Leo XIV to remember Kenya in his prayers as the head of the Catholic Church begins his first apostolic visit to Africa.

In a message addressed to the Pontiff, Musyoka called for spiritual intervention amid growing political activity and emerging tensions in the country. He urged the Pope to pray for peace, unity and ethical leadership, emphasizing the need for national cohesion.

“I humbly beseech Your Holiness to intercede in prayer on our behalf, that Kenya may be blessed with lasting peace, social harmony, and leaders who govern not for themselves, but for the common good of all our people,” Musyoka said.

The Wiper leader framed his appeal within Kenya’s broader political climate, where early mobilization efforts ahead of future elections have intensified. Political actors have increased grassroots campaigns, public rallies and coalition negotiations across the country.

Musyoka welcomed the Pope’s visit to Africa, describing the continent as one marked by deep faith, resilience and hope. He said the visit represents a message of spiritual unity and solidarity with African nations.

Appeal comes amid rising political tensions

Quoting the Latin phrase “Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est” meaning “where charity and love are found, there is God” Musyoka said the Pope’s mission reflects the enduring values of compassion, unity and service upheld by the Church.

Although Pope Leo XIV’s itinerary does not include Kenya, Musyoka expressed optimism that the country could host the Pontiff in the future. He cited longstanding diplomatic and religious ties between Nairobi and the Holy See as a foundation for a potential visit.

The appeal comes amid heightened political activity across Kenya. In recent months, isolated incidents of violence and disruptions during political gatherings have been reported in several regions.

Security agencies have remained on alert following sporadic clashes, raising fears that tensions could escalate if not addressed early. Observers warn that such developments, if unchecked, could undermine national stability.

Musyoka’s message underscores the role of moral and spiritual leadership in shaping public discourse, particularly during politically sensitive periods. His appeal reflects a broader call among leaders and civil society for restraint, dialogue and peaceful engagement.

Analysts say religious voices continue to play a significant role in promoting unity in Kenya, especially during election cycles when divisions often deepen.

As political momentum builds, Musyoka’s request to the Pope highlights a growing desire for national reflection and collective responsibility, with many hoping that faith driven appeals can help steer the country toward a more peaceful path.
