Mary Moraa, the 800m winner from the Commonwealth Games, won the women’s 400m race at the World Championships trials in Nyayo Stadium by setting a new national record of 50.38 seconds. Moraa lowered her own record of 50.44 seconds set at the Botswana Grand Prix on 29 April with her spectacular triumph in the one-lap race. “I definitely didn’t anticipate breaking the national record, especially given the weather.” My only goal was to run well, therefore I’m astonished by the outcome, said Moraa. The 400m world bronze medalist has already clocked a time that is under the qualifying threshold of 51.00 seconds. As the current Diamond League champion, Moraa has already qualified for the women’s 800m without having to do anything. “My intention is to try and compete in both events, but that will be decided by the selection panel,” Moraa said.
