Calvince Okoth, popularly known as Gaucho, has announced his intention to vie for a parliamentary seat in Kenya’s 2027 general elections, signaling an early entry into what is expected to be a highly competitive political cycle.
Speaking on Monday, 20 April 2026, Gaucho said he is weighing options across multiple constituencies, including Embakasi East, currently represented by Babu Owino. He also mentioned Murang’a County and his rural home in Rongo as potential alternatives.
“Come 2027, I will be an MP. I will be an MP for either Embakasi East, Murang’a or back in my rural home,” Gaucho said.
Gaucho’s declaration reflects a broader trend among Kenyan politicians who are beginning to position themselves well ahead of the next general election. Early announcements are increasingly being used to build name recognition, mobilize grassroots support and shape political narratives.
His remarks come at a time when political alignments are gradually taking shape, particularly among leaders associated with the Orange Democratic Movement. Gaucho has been a visible supporter of party leader Raila Odinga, often engaging in political discourse that resonates with the party’s base.
He further revealed that he had held private discussions with Odinga regarding his political future.
“Raila Odinga wanted me to be an MP in 2027 and there were some things we talked about which I can’t say because there might be people after my blood, but when I become an MP I’ll make public,” he said.
Succession politics and rising profile
Gaucho’s potential bid for the Embakasi East seat places him in a constituency that has been under Babu Owino’s leadership since 2017. Owino, who was re-elected in 2022, remains a prominent figure in Nairobi politics and has previously hinted at pursuing a gubernatorial seat in the future.
Should Owino shift his focus to a county-wide position, Embakasi East could emerge as a key battleground, attracting multiple contenders seeking to inherit his political base.
Gaucho’s early declaration positions him within this emerging succession conversation. However, analysts note that translating online popularity and activism into electoral success remains a significant challenge, particularly in urban constituencies with complex voter dynamics.
Gaucho has recently gained increased public attention following his appointment to the board of Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital in Nairobi County. The appointment, made during the tenure of Governor Johnson Sakaja in April 2026, sparked mixed reactions from the public.
Supporters viewed the move as recognition of youth voices in governance, while critics questioned the criteria used to select board members, citing concerns over professional qualifications and experience.
According to official communication, Gaucho is among several individuals appointed to serve a three-year term on the hospital’s board.
Responding to criticism, he urged patience from the public.
“To my critics, let us give it some time,” Gaucho said, defending his ability to contribute to the role.
Gaucho’s political journey highlights the evolving nature of leadership in Kenya, where social media influence and grassroots engagement are increasingly intersecting with formal governance roles.
As he eyes a parliamentary seat, his ability to navigate public scrutiny, build alliances and articulate a clear policy agenda will likely determine his viability as a candidate.
With more than a year before the official campaign period begins, Gaucho’s announcement marks the start of what could be a closely watched political trajectory leading into the 2027 elections.
