Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly Robert Alai Onyango has sparked fresh political debate after accusing former President Uhuru Kenyatta of misleading former opposition leader Raila Odinga during the run-up to the 2022 general election.
In widely circulated remarks, Alai alleged that Kenyatta failed to effectively support Odinga’s presidential bid, instead exposing him to distractions that undermined his campaign. The claims, delivered in blunt and controversial language, have drawn mixed reactions across Kenya political landscape.
Alai also criticized Siaya Governor James Orengo, questioning his role within Odinga inner circle. He claimed that key allies did not prioritize strategy and coordination needed for victory, though he did not provide evidence to support the allegations.
Alai remarks reignite debate on 2022 election alliances
Odinga lost the closely contested 2022 presidential election to current President William Ruto, marking his fifth unsuccessful bid for the country top seat. The election outcome was upheld by the Supreme Court following a legal challenge by Odinga team.
Uhuru Kenyatta, who had completed his constitutionally mandated two terms, had backed Odinga, a move that reshaped political alliances and triggered debate among leaders and voters.
Political analysts say the election outcome was shaped by multiple factors including voter turnout, campaign strategy, and coalition dynamics. Some argue that internal divisions within Azimio coalition may have weakened Odinga campaign.
Alai remarks have drawn mixed reactions online, with critics accusing him of fueling division while supporters say he is raising questions about accountability within political alliances.
