Giving Back Is a Duty: Mama Dota brings festive cheer to Langas ward’s most vulnerable
Residents of Langas Ward receive food donations from Florence Akinyi, founder of the Mama Dota Foundation
Over two thousand Langas Ward residents have benefited from a gesture of goodwill after philanthropist Florence Akinyi, popularly known as Mama Dota rolled out a festive food donation exercise targeting vulnerable households.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Mama Dota Foundation during this period commonly associated with celebration and family gatherings saw women, senior citizens and people with disabilities benefit from the flour, rice, sugar and salt package.
Speaking during the event, Mama Dota underscored the need for compassion and shared responsibility in building stronger communities.
“As a society, we must look out for one another, especially those who are most vulnerable. We recognise the unique financial pressures they often face hence the selection criteria. Giving back is not an option ,it is a duty we all share,” she said.
She further reiterated the Mama Dota Foundation’s commitment to supporting residents by addressing basic needs and promoting dignity at the grassroots. “Since its inception, the foundation has remained focused on touching lives and restoring hope within our community,” Akinyi added.
Founded in 2013, the Mama Dota Foundation has over the years established itself as a key player in community empowerment, implementing various social welfare programmes aimed at improving livelihoods and supporting vulnerable populations.
According to Susan Mmbone a person with disability, this initiative came in handy for her, expressing gratitude to Mmaa Dota Foundation for reaching out to people with disabilities,a group she noted is often overlooked in community support programmes.
“As a person with a disability, life is not easy, especially when it comes to meeting basic needs like food,” Mmbone said. “Today, Mama Dota Foundation has shown us that we are not forgotten. This support means a lot to me and my family.”
Mmbone noted that the rising cost of living has made it increasingly difficult for persons with disabilities to sustain themselves, particularly those without stable sources of income. She said the food donation would help ease the burden at home and allow her to focus on other pressing needs.
“Sometimes you wake up not knowing where the next meal will come from,” she added. “Receiving this food gives me peace of mind and hope that tomorrow can be better.”
As the festive season draws nearer, the initiative served as a powerful reminder of the impact of generosity and unity, leaving many beneficiaries encouraged and reaffirming the importance of community solidarity.
