South Africa failed to maintain its two goal lead against Argentina on Friday in their second group G match at the Dunedin’s Forsyth Barr Stadium, in New Zealand.

Linda Motlhalo’s 30th minute and Thembi Kgatlana’s 66th minute goals gave South Africa a clear lead but Argentina managed to level the matters 13 minutes later, Sophia Broun in the 74th minute and Romina Núñez in the 79th minute to level the matters 2 – 2.

South Africa are now sitting on third position with one point with Argentina on the anchor with the same point.

I don’t think it was the defence that was the problem, the defence held out really well. It  was the chances we created, it was the moments when we got into the final third and made the wrong decisions, the players running free on goal. If we had made better decisions, we would be talking differently right now.

We cannot create all those chances, and then they get those two chances at the back and they score. It’s about taking our chances and making the right decisions in the final third,” said South Africa’s head coach Desiree Ellis.

Argentina and South Africa will play their last match of the group next week Wednesday a must win for both teams if they need to qualify for the round of 16.

Current group G leaders, Sweden who are sitting on three points will face Argentina with the later match being second placed Italy who also have three points against South Africa.
