Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, has commended the senior women’s team for putting up a tenacious fight following their 4 – 2 loss to England in Monday’s FIFA Women’s World Cup knockout stage at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, Australia.

Despite Nigeria coming into the match as the underdogs, they were the dominant side throughout the match with 20 shots at goal compared to 12 of England but they failed to land any of those shots at the back of the net throughout the 90 minutes even into extra time.

Following the stalemate in extra time both teams were compelled to fight it out in a penalty shootout for a spot at the quarterfinals.

England used its experience and netted in four missing one courtesy of Chloe Kelly, Alex Greenwood, Rachel Daly, and Bethany England.

However, Nigeria missed three and netted in two courtesy of Christy Ucheibe and Rasheedat Ajibade, which eventually saw England winning the match.

I must commend the effort by our Super Falcons at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Your brilliant performance did not go unnoticed despite the final outcome. You made Nigeria proud on the global stage,” said Tinubu.

Nigeria is now the third African team to exit the World Cup title race following South Africa who were knocked out by Sweden on Sunday and Zambia who left in the group stages.

As a result, Morocco is now the only African team left and will be playing against France for a spot at the quarterfinals on Tuesday at the Hindmarsh Stadium in Adelaide, Australia.
