In a message shared on his social media platform X, Maraga urged citizens to take ownership of the campaign by contributing any amount they can afford. He said the approach would ensure that his leadership remains accountable to the people rather than powerful financiers.
“Fellow Kenyans, I need you to help me reset, rebuild and restore Kenya,” Maraga said. “I have chosen to run a campaign that is funded by you, ordinary Kenyans.”
Public driven funding model
Supporters can contribute through a designated online platform or via M-Pesa Paybill number 4164137. Maraga emphasized that even the smallest contributions matter, describing the effort as a collective national project.
According to Maraga, a people funded campaign would transform the traditional political financing model in Kenya, which has often been criticized for lack of transparency and heavy reliance on wealthy donors.
The former Chief Justice said public contributions would strengthen accountability, noting that leaders backed by citizens are more likely to prioritize public interest. He pledged that if elected, his administration would reflect the will of everyday Kenyans.
“If my campaign is funded by donations from you, the everyday Kenyan, then it becomes our campaign,” he said. “And I will be accountable to you.”
Political analysts say the crowdfunding strategy could resonate with younger voters and those frustrated by conventional politics. However, its success will depend on sustained public engagement and trust.
