Tanzania main opposition party CHADEMA has formally urged the African Union to revoke the appointment of former President Jakaya Kikwete as High Level Representative for the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region.

In a letter addressed to AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the party raised concerns about Kikwete impartiality, arguing that his political history undermines the credibility required for such a sensitive diplomatic role.

According to CHADEMA, the appointment risks weakening the AU conflict resolution mandate in one of Africa most volatile regions. The Horn of Africa remains strategically important due to its proximity to key global trade routes and ongoing political tensions.

Concerns over neutrality

CHADEMA said Kikwete past actions cast doubt on his ability to serve as a neutral mediator. The party accused him of playing a central role in delaying Tanzania constitution making process, which it argues hindered democratic reforms.

The opposition also pointed to his advisory role to President Samia Suluhu Hassan, as well as his association with the late President John Magufuli administration, both of which have faced criticism over restrictions on civil liberties and political space.

“He played a central role in stalling Tanzania constitution making process, directly undermining democratic aspirations,” the party said in its statement.

CHADEMA warned that appointing a figure perceived as politically aligned could fuel distrust among regional actors. The party said such a move may undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts and reduce confidence in the AU mediation processes.

The Horn of Africa and Red Sea corridor includes countries facing complex conflicts often linked to governance challenges, making neutrality essential for any envoy.

Analysts have long emphasized that credible leadership is critical for sustaining peace initiatives in fragile regions.

CHADEMA called on the AU to conduct a transparent review of the appointment and consider replacing Kikwete with a candidate demonstrating a strong record in democracy, human rights and impartial diplomacy.

The party also questioned whether adequate due diligence was conducted before the appointment was made.

“The credibility of the African Union depends on principled leadership,” the statement said, warning that politically sensitive decisions could undermine the institution legitimacy.
