Rift Valley Imams demand end to divisive political rhetoric

Muslim clerics in Kenya Rift Valley have condemned escalating political tensions across the country, urging leaders to tone down divisive rhetoric and prioritise economic stability over premature political campaigns.

The clerics spoke during a food distribution exercise for vulnerable women in the northern part of the Rift Valley region, where they expressed concern over what they described as rising political hostility in various parts of the country.

Places of worship should not host political messaging

Led by Sheikh Abubakar Bini, the religious leaders called on both Muslim and Christian clerics not to allow politicians to use mosques and churches as platforms for partisan or inflammatory messaging.

They said places of worship must remain neutral spaces dedicated to spiritual nourishment, peace and moral guidance rather than political mobilisation.

Kenya has witnessed heightened political activity in recent months despite the absence of an official campaign period. The clerics warned that early political manoeuvres risk increasing public anxiety at a time when many citizens are struggling with the high cost of living.

Focus on economy and youth responsibility

The leaders urged political figures to shift attention towards strengthening the economy and addressing pressing social challenges affecting households across the country.

With the holy month of Ramadan underway, the imams also cautioned young people against allowing themselves to be used to cause chaos at political gatherings. They encouraged the youth to embrace discipline, reflection and religious teachings during the sacred period.

The clerics further reminded religious leaders of their responsibility to uphold integrity and moral standards at all times, noting that believers depend on them for both spiritual direction and broader social guidance.

They emphasised that unity and responsible leadership are critical in maintaining stability in diverse regions such as Rift Valley.
