Government weather authorities have issued a nationwide alert warning of intensified rainfall over the coming days, raising concerns about flooding, landslides and transport disruptions.

The Kenya Meteorological Department said rainfall exceeding 20 millimetres within 24 hours is expected from 19 March through 24 March.

“The rainfall being experienced over several parts of the country is expected to intensify,” the agency said.

Peak rainfall is forecast between 20 March and 23 March, with conditions expected to ease slightly from 24 March, although showers will continue in several regions.

The agency identified the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley and the highlands east and west of the Rift Valley among the areas likely to be most affected. The capital, Nairobi, is also expected to receive significant rainfall.

Dozens of counties across western, central and coastal Kenya have been listed under the advisory, highlighting the widespread impact of the weather system.

Authorities warned that residents in low-lying and landslide-prone areas, including the Aberdare ranges and parts of western Kenya, face increased risk.

Flooding and safety concerns

Officials cautioned that flash floods, poor visibility and lightning strikes could pose serious dangers.

“Flood waters may appear in places where it has not rained heavily, especially downstream,” the agency said.

Residents have been advised to avoid walking or driving through moving water and to avoid sheltering under trees during storms.

The Kenya Red Cross and national emergency teams have been placed on alert as the country enters the long rains season.

This period is often associated with flooding that disrupts transport, displaces communities and damages crops.

Authorities are urging the public to monitor official updates and follow safety guidance to reduce risks during the ongoing weather event.
