Football stakeholders to stage demo, present petition parliament over FKF leadership

A section of football stakeholders are to stage protests Monday in Nairobi, the same day Kenya’s Harambee Stars host Togo in a 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

Kurunzi understands the demonstrations will take place from 10.00am, the protesters expected to first converge at Uhuru Park before serving a petition to both Houses of Parliament.

“We will also drop our petition with the media houses because football in this country is with the dogs now and we cannot just sit back and watch the game be destroyed,” one of the planners told Kurunzi.

The current football administration led by Nick Mwendwa, the president of Football Kenya Federation, has been on the spotlight over what some stakeholders have described as a “collapse of the beautiful game”.

Mwendwa has faced a litany of allegations, including a plot to lock out opponents intending to dethrone him at the forthcoming FKF elections and, recently, failure to account for public money given to the federation from the Sports Fund.

Other accusations include “chasing away sponsors”, his critics saying his tenure has seen corporate partners shy away from football because of “poor leadership”.

A petition challenging the legality of the electoral process is due for hearing tomorrow at the Sports Disputes Tribunal.
