Govt applauds Netball SA for successful World Cup

Several South African Government officials have commended Netball South Africa for hosting a successful World Cup that ended on Sunday.

The Netball World Cup which for the first time was being held in Africa saw Australia clinching their 12th title following their decisive 61 – 45 victory on Sunday at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

16 teams conveyed in Cape Town from the 28th of August to the 6th of July with Africa being represented by Malawi, who finished seventh, Uganda who finished fifth, South Africa who finished sixth and Zimbabwe who clinched the 13th position.

Despite not making it to the podium, President Cyril Ramaphosa and Zizi Kodwa the Minister of Sport commended Netball South Africa and the senior women’s team for putting out a gallant performance.

I have been following the Netball World Cup for the last couple of days and I can safely say netball has gained a new fan. Attending the Netball World Cup final match was electric. I had an opportunity earlier to meet and personally thank the netball team who have really done us proud during this tournament. Our girls put on a solid performance and put up a really good fight. Thank you for flying the flag. We are proud of you.

We are proud of our netball team’s heroic campaign in the first Netball World Cup to be staged in Cape Town. You have made us proud and we look forward to your future victories on our continent and globally,” said Ramaphosa.

In addition, the Minister of Sport said the World Cup was not only a sporting event but a platform of uniting people.

As we crown the new World Cup champions and hosts of the next netball world cup, Australia, we reflect on what has been an extraordinary ten days of competition, camaraderie and fun. Well done to all who made this a World Cup to remember!

The Netball World Cup has brought together people from far and wide, from fans to media who have covered this global showpiece. The various stakeholders have worked together to make it a success,” said Kodwa.

Australia which now has the most world cup titles will be hosting the next world cup and it’s fourth in 2027.
