Former Kirinyaga Senator Daniel Karaba has died at the age of 78, marking the end of a long career in education and public service that spanned decades.
Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru announced his death, describing him as a distinguished leader devoted to serving his community.
“We have lost a distinguished son of Kirinyaga, Hon. Daniel Karaba, whose life was defined by service, humility, and a deep commitment to education and leadership,” she said in a statement shared on X.
Waiguru praised Karaba’s journey from education to politics, noting his impact as a teacher, principal and later a national leader. She extended condolences to his family, friends and residents of Kirinyaga County.
Former Kirinyaga Woman Representative Wangui Ngirici also paid tribute, describing Karaba as a devoted educator and respected leader whose influence shaped many lives.
“I’m deeply saddened to learn of his passing. His life touched many, shaping minds, guiding communities and serving with dedication and humility,” she wrote on Facebook.
Born in 1948 in Kiamaina, Kirinyaga County, Karaba built his early career in education. He served as a teacher before rising to become principal of Kianyaga High School, where he helped transform the institution into a regional academic powerhouse.
He also chaired the Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association between 1984 and 1998, reinforcing his reputation as a leader in the education sector.
Known widely as “Mwalimu,” Karaba’s background in education earned him respect and laid a strong foundation for his transition into politics.
Karaba entered politics in 2002 during Kenya’s multiparty transition, winning the Kirinyaga Central parliamentary seat on a National Rainbow Coalition ticket. His victory came during the historic defeat of KANU’s long-standing rule.
He served as Member of Parliament from 2003 to 2007 before returning to public life in 2013, when he was elected senator under The National Alliance party, part of the Jubilee coalition.
His tenure in the Senate coincided with the early years of devolution, where he represented Kirinyaga County at the national level.
No details regarding the cause or place of his death have been released.
Karaba is remembered as a dedicated public servant whose contributions to education and governance left a lasting imprint on Kirinyaga and the nation.
