Democratic Party leader and 2027 presidential candidate Hon. JB Muturi has raised the alarm over an alleged land grabbing scheme targeting portions of land previously surrendered by Del Monte in Murang’a County.
Muturi reminded residents that during his tenure as Speaker of the National Assembly, Parliament adopted a resolution directing the allocation of the land to nearly 4,000 deserving local beneficiaries. He expressed deep concern that a significant portion meant for ordinary citizens may have been transferred through questionable means.
The former Speaker pointed to recommendations from the National Land Commission and past parliamentary reports that sought to address historical disputes surrounding Del Monte’s vast holdings in Murang’a and Kiambu counties.
Muturi further alleged that individuals linked to the current administration played a role in the disputed allocations, undermining the interests of the local community.
“We will ensure that justice is served to the people of Murang’a and that land meant for local residents is restored and allocated transparently in accordance with the law,” he declared.
United Alternative Government Pledges Action
The United Alternative Government principals, including former Deputy President Hon. Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper leader Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka, and former Agriculture CS Hon. Eugene Wamalwa, attended the event. The leaders reiterated their commitment to safeguarding public land and ensuring equitable distribution of resources.
Muturi stated that upon assuming mandate in the coming months, the new administration will fully implement Parliament’s decision and the National Land Commission’s recommendations on the Del Monte land issue.
The controversy forms part of a protracted dispute involving Del Monte Kenya Ltd, which has held large tracts in the region for decades. Past efforts, including presidential intervention and parliamentary petitions, have sought to excise and redistribute portions of the land for public benefit and local settlement.
Local leaders and residents continue to demand transparency in the handling of the surrendered parcels to prevent further irregular allocations.
