Ghana will introduce visa free entry for all African passport holders starting 25 May, President John Mahama announced, marking a major shift in the country travel and immigration policy.

The policy coincides with Africa Day celebrations and is expected to boost tourism, promote intra African trade and reinforce Ghana position as a leader in Pan Africanism.

President Mahama made the announcement during the inaugural state visit of Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa to Ghana, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The visa free regime removes the need for pre arrival visas for African travelers, easing movement across borders and supporting economic cooperation efforts across the continent.

Ghana now joins a small group of African countries including Benin, The Gambia, Rwanda and Seychelles that allow visa free entry to all African nationals.

Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa said the initiative is aimed at strengthening regional integration while unlocking economic opportunities through increased travel and commerce.

The new system will take effect on 25 May and will be integrated into a broader immigration reform programme being rolled out by the government.

Authorities say the reform includes a new e visa platform expected to launch next month to streamline entry processes while maintaining border security.

The government said the goal is to simplify travel procedures without compromising national safety while improving efficiency at entry points.

The policy builds on an earlier announcement made by former President Nana Akufo Addo in January 2025, when he pledged visa free travel for all African passport holders.

That plan did not take effect before the end of his tenure, but the current administration has moved to implement it as part of a wider continental strategy.

Officials say the move reflects continuity in Ghana long term vision to strengthen ties across Africa and position itself as a leading destination for tourism and investment.

Analysts say the policy could significantly increase visitor numbers and support growth in sectors such as hospitality, aviation and cross border trade.

The initiative also aligns with broader efforts under the African Continental Free Trade Area framework to reduce travel barriers and enhance economic integration.

In addition, Ghana has expanded travel access for its citizens, with the Foreign Ministry confirming that 23 visa waiver agreements have been negotiated for Ghanaian passport holders since last year.

The decision reinforces Ghana historical role in advancing Pan African ideals by promoting unity, cultural exchange and economic cooperation across the continent.

The policy is expected to fully take effect on 25 May, signaling a new phase in efforts to improve mobility and strengthen connections among African nations.
